Happy Birthday Ellie!!!

The First of the April Birthdays....

My "baby" is 14 years old today!

The day you were born your dad and I had gone out for breakfast at Perkins in Ames...and he was buying a video camera at Sears while I was in labor (rapid breathing) at the counter scaring the salesman to death!

I remember 14 years ago today we lived in a very small, old house we were fixing up. My aunt and uncle were there helping wallpaper our kitchen. (My aunt's name is Elna Mae--or Ellie as she was called) She passed away this weekend...10 years ago. She was a very special lady and we named our Ellie after her.

You are having coffee cake for breakfast.
Dinner: grilled cheeseburgers (PICKLES) tabbouleh salad (your fave) and red velvet cake (which I'm not sure you will like...but you'll love the cream cheese frosting!)

Enjoy your day today Ellie! We love you!!!!

Mom, dad and all your siblings

The Strangest Things...

What's the strangest thing you've found in your refrigerator or washer/dryer? In the dryer it's usually Lego pieces, nails, hair things...today it was a harmonica in the washer. (I don't check pockets)

Rumor has it someone in our family (not immediate) kept a frozen cat in her freezer for awhile....I think she also had a dead rabbit in her trunk (not at the same time...as if that makes it sound better!) That's a whole other blog! :)

Every once in awhile I'll open my refrigerator and find something very odd...like a Lego person.

In fact, right now in our freezer I could pull out some nice, frozen snowballs (saved from the last snow) or how about tiny mud balls ala Carsen? (he's been known to keep those in his bedroom too!) I always find out when we have company for dinner. He can't wait to show them.

I've even found a frozen insect in container of water. I'll just call it Science Lab 101 for the kids.

Don't worry. I've you come over for dinner I will be sure to check what I'm defrosting before I cook it! :)

The House Has Food (for a day or two)

I realized that when I'm stressed or angry I like to cook....alot....all at once.

Today on tap is:

black bean and chicken soup

red lentil soup

split pea/ham soup

I must like that busy feeling of having control over something..and being productive. (except when my soup boils over...which is regularly)

The fire alarms go off several times a week here. I think if there ever was an actual fire our kids would all run to the kitchen first to see if something was boiling over!

At least we'll have something to eat for the next day. I'm still boiling though.

Kisses and Stats....

Last week Marie asked me several nights in a row why I kissed her good-night. I didn't think much about it but just said "because I love you".
In bed the other night it finally dawned on me...I wonder if she EVER had a good-night kiss before in her 10+ yrs? Then suddenly I was overcome with ALL the orphans in the world...
All those kids who never get good-night kisses, warm meals, families...love.

Think about this number for a minute:

143 MILLION kids

143 million.

What does 143 MILLION kids look like? I can't even imagine. Many, many nights I wonder why? What can we do? This is just wrong.
